PE x MDF: An Interview with  Perla Castañón

April 27th, 2022 - By David Eardley

How can we rethink design exhibitions? This April and May, Pink Essay is partnering with Mexico Design Fair, a new annual platform seeking to rethink the traditional structure and format of design fairs and create something more personal.

The intersectionality of design and its relevance to the lived realities of the world is both essential and often ignored within many design dialogues. How does design connect to activism, nationality, self-care, or even spirituality? These questions are important to understanding the work of Mexico City-based creative Perla Castañón, whose work is among the lineup of designers exhibiting at this year’s iteration of the fair. Whether it be her production design for the screen or her industrial design works, exploration and reflection are at the core.

Perla represents a movement in design—that of change and growth beyond the traditions and antiquated thinking that have long propped up the profit and growth for the elite and few others. We met over video conference to discuss this change and Perla’s own relationship with design—design as concept, and design as direction.

What has been drawing your attention this week?
¿Qué ha captado tu atención esta semana?
I am an industrial designer, but I am also a production designer—I have been tired of production design to be honest—it’s overwhelming and stressful, but I did take on one project recently. We had a deadline and were busy working on the concepts, ideas, 3D models and renderings. All the things to be prepared for our presentation. We had a deadline last night, so I was really overwhelmed.

It’s a sort of cool conceptual scenario, to play a lot with lighting. They have this reference from the Drake video (“Hotline Bling”) with a sun and huge stage lights. Of course they don't have that kind of budget, but we tried to do something interesting. I talk in plural because I had a partner with this project, which I'm starting to collaborate with—Andrea, industrial and emotional designer.

We both were tired of the conditions of the industry, so we are kind of working on a manifesto. Like, we want to work like this, or don't take this. So yeah—we want to change it in a way, the way things work.

What do you feel like you and your partner were running up against that was frustrating? Do you think it was related to specific kinds of people, specific ways of working?

Yeah. Labor conditions, gender inequality, harassment, timing, pressure—a lot of pressure—a lot of inhuman treatment, it's a tough place to work in:  it feels like as you go down [the ranks] it gets unbelievable how they treat people; like they are soldiers or something. There is a lot of ego too, so mainly we want humane and fair treatment, for everyone on the team.

Fees are very low here in Mexico. It’s not cool that people come here from other countries to have work made and try and pay as little as possible. Also, with Mexican companies: even when there is a budget, they pay too little and like three months after the project.

Right. So mainly these points, about payment, equality and treatment. And we are working on a manifesto regarding that. We just want to work without compromising our health and lifestyle, which is hard to find these days in almost any field.

Rightfully so. To me, there's a combination of challenges: some are universal within the design industry and then some are specific to the geographic location. I’ve witnessed this international relationship: designers who are coming from countries like the United States to fabricate here for a lower price. A lot of designers from New York are like, “Yeah, I'm gonna go to Mexico and have my work fabricated because it’s ‘cheap’.”

It’s almost like they only can see it far as saving money and no further about, well, where that money is coming from or what else is being sacrificed or what is being lost when you aren't paying someone the amount you would pay them somewhere else. It's a big issue. It's a really big problem.

Yeah. And it's weird, because if they are paying a greater amount in their country, they don't question it. “It's okay. I will pay it.” But for some reason they think it’s ok to pay less here and that we need to be grateful because of that.

Quite a neo-colonialist mentality, of being able to use without giving back. I see it a lot. The way I hear people talking about Mexico, especially among the extranjero tourists, is frustrating. Do you feel like many designers here in Mexico feel the same way you do?

I'm not sure. I think you select your people and I try to be near people whose thinking goes a bit wider. I'm not into politics at all, but I'm into social movements. I think my people tend to be in the architectural design arts—that kind of sphere. My community is intending to make a change in their work and in their environment.
No estoy segura.

I really think that design is a very powerful tool, like a changing reality tool—very powerful. And I think that in many schools, they don't share this knowledge as a way to change the world but often just to change these fancy environments for fancy clients. I think that's the main problem.

As designers, we have a lot of responsibility: we should be using this tool and be conscious about how we can change things, about the problems and people and how we can support their way of life. It’s easy to just design a chair or design a table, but how can we do more?

It’s something I’m still figuring out for myself, inside of me, but I think we need designers in any category to balance priorities as a community, as a world and work towards something better for everybody.

I think that all new designers, or if you want to become a designer, you have to believe in yourself and your responsibility to your community.

Do you feel that having awareness of problems in the world equals necessary responsibility?
It's like a way of thinking, not just a career. I think they should teach design in all careers—so that everybody could be a designer, in a way. We have the gift to solve problems and that is in a way our responsibility.
That makes sense. Since this isn’t our reality yet—design taught to everyone—how do you recommend that students and young people might go about educating themselves?
I think, luckily, young people have this drive already. They are super informed, they like to investigate everything. They are about their own principles—they stand for them, they fight for them and they don't want things as before. Like they want to make changes.

Even if they are not designers or even if they are, they are standing for their rights and for their principles. In that way, the chair could become a flag, you know—like a manifest.

Yeah, a truly interesting idea. How do you see this mentality in your own work?

I am trying to find this essence in my design work. For many years, I worked in an interior and furniture design studio. That was my first job. I worked there for six years and I was very happy. I was giving all of myself to it—more than I should.

But it was so often these rich people asking for a nice place. And yeah—it was kind of easy for me to create a nice place, but that was it. There was no purpose for me. Of course for them there was, but not for me. And I quit. And then I tried to find something more interesting—to not be in an office all day long. And I got into cinema production design.
No tenía propósito.

For many years it was very exciting, because you could be working on any kind of project. It is very interesting thinking how to approach different kinds of aesthetics, with a certain amount of money. But I started to get exhausted. And then quarantine came, came and it was time to stop and to rethink everything. And I was very drained and began to start this kind of spiritual journey.

I’m trying to take this spiritual pause and this time of rethinking things—it’s given me a chance to reconnect and to heal how I feel about myself and about design and to realize that I really love it. I really like it. It's a very beautiful tool and a way to express yourself, to express people, to express things.

So let's see what comes from this. But I try, at least, to make things with honesty.

I think that, to me, when design really succeeds is when it fully reflects the human condition. Whether it's very personal or very universal, like, it somehow taps into that. It’s cool to hear about your journey with that experience.

For me, it's very hard sometimes to understand how art could change the world, you know. Sometimes when you’re working on a project, you think, “How could this really change anything?”

But when you connect to your energy and just let it flow and direct that to something—like making something—you feel it. And I think that when you connect with other people in that process, you feel something also. And that's the important thing.  It would be nice to have people connecting with my stuff and making them feel something the same way.︎
