PE x MDF: An Interview with Armando Quintana

April 20th, 2022 - By David Eardley

How can we rethink design exhibitions? This April and May, Pink Essay is partnering with Mexico Design Fair, a new annual platform seeking to rethink the traditional structure and format of design fairs and create something more personal.

The fair focuses on bringing together a limited special blend of design collectors, journalists, and industry professionals to curate an intimate experience beachside in Puerto Escondido, Mexico. Over the next two months, we will be sharing a series of interviews with designers and tastemakers working connected to the fair, as well as capturing our experience of the event through our own perspective.

For our first interview, I sat down with Armando Quintana, one of the founders and organizers of the fair, to discuss the project and its connection to his already diverse portfolio of current work. Armando is something of a design prodigy: at 27, he has already studied architecture at Tecnológico de Monterrey, co-runs an international design gallery based in Mexico, is currently launching a new design magazine, and (speaking from personal experience) knows just about every person working in the design industry here in Mexico City.

Armando was kind enough to invite me over to his apartment in Mexico City for a beautiful breakfast at his apartment, where we sat to discuss his work and outlook on the fair, design in Mexico, and making change.

This morning, we’ve been talking (over this lovely breakfast you made) a lot about design. How’s your week been going?
My weeks can be very random, though all the parts are connected. This week, I was writing the editorial letter for a new publication we’re making. Yesterday, I was visiting a designer. This morning, I had a call with a collector from New York. Later this week, I'm doing a studio visit in a factory—a production visit.

I feel like, for me, there are all these snippets of things and my job is to see how everything fits together: how the piece that it's being produced in a factory will end up in the house of the collector, or how this designer will be interesting for this press person. So it's all connected. It's all very similar, but at the same time, the day to day is all very different.

So many projects. Can you tell me about the ones that have stood out to you over the past months?
Muchos proyectos.

Basically, there are three main things that I've been working on. One is the design gallery—CGN—it’s been around for 11 years now. It specializes in contemporary design works, not only from Mexico, but also from around the world. More and more, we’re also working with international designers: from the Middle East, Europe, South America, etc.

The other project that I've been working on is Mexico Design Fair, which is a new platform for contemporary design that started from a need to find a new platform for the gallery, different from the current platforms that existed in Mexico.

We needed to find something that focused on the commercial acquisition of design. It's not the sexiest part of design, but it's a very important element of the entire equation, to make things work. If people are not acquiring the design, it's very difficult for a designer to produce a second or a third collection.

The third project that I've been working on is Dysprosium, a new printed design publication about critical design thinking. If you are a young designer or a young design student in Mexico and you want to read something in Spanish, it's very difficult to find something critical and accessible that is not superacademic.

It’s a time in Mexico where a lot of young people are choosing to study design or go into design as a living, and a time where Mexico is really hot in terms of design, in the world. There is a lot being made, but there is a lack of criticality. What, how, when are these design works being made? That’s what the magazine is aimed at. We're getting very close to sending it to press—hopefully this week.

It's a triangle of moving parts, where each part is oriented toward the topic of design from a different angle. The gallery as a physical space, the fair as an interactive, pop-up element and then the publication as this sort of educational, particularly intellectual element.

They’re all intellectual, in their own way. Carlos, my business partner for the gallery, and I are very nerdy and very geeky about these kinds of things—we don't only want to find sexy chairs and sell them. We also have a collection of Mexican design from this century, in order to build a collection and to start identifying who the designers are and what the techniques are that will have a historic value. Usually it has something to do with elements that are not physical or immediately visible in an object or work.

I think in the day and age we're living in, in our relationship to the internet, there's no shortage of sexy design, but more of a shortage of this anthropological approach to design, which is design history, but also like design history in the making.

So, it’s what is happening outside of these images that we're seeing on the internet or a sexy chair in a gallery—that's also as important as the physical object itself.

Yeah. And I think especially because Mexican design is super photogenic—Mexican design photographs really well. We have a really specific attention to relationship, to materiality, to techniques, to color, to shapes, to proportions; in many ways, Mexican design is not lacking in those.

What Mexican design, in my opinion, is lacking is more of “How do we make the production of things accessible for people?” A design object should be for everybody involved in the process of making it. And this involves paying the people that are producing it properly. To do that, you need a solid market that will value this process.

We're trying to push through all the different parts of the process to find a better scenario. When a designer has the backing of an industry or a company or a gallery, it allows them to focus on creation and be very critical about the object and all the components that interact with it. Then, they don't have to also worry about financing, marketing, or selling it.

So I think we can have better design if it’s coming from designers that only have to think about the constraints of their own design process.

Design is very personal, and it should be personal. And I think that's a good sort of segue into talking about Mexico Design Fair—MDF. When we talk about design fairs, I don’t really think of experiences that are very personal or intimate: I think of these convention halls, these very sterile booths, where you’re just making the rounds.
But MDF sounds pretty different from that. Could you explain a bit more about the structure of the fair?
Well, it started in pandemic times—the setup was ideal for the pandemic, with only 100 people invited, including collectors, designers, press, etc. It’s meant to be very intimate, to get up close to the pieces and interact with them.
It’s a travel experience, on the beach in Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca. There are four concrete cubes and there's a pool in the middle. We turned those concrete cubes into an exhibition space—we wanted to change how contemporary or traditional fairs operate—to not have the pieces separated out into booths like they would be at a fair, where you’re more inclined to visit the booths that have a more impressive or expensive setup. We wanted to put pieces from very established people right next to designers  that are up and coming, and help them start their career in front of an international design audience. To level the playing field for the designers.

It brings a different kind of understanding to it. It’s what’s so cool about design, because we all are surrounded by design all the time. We all sit on something, we all like to lay down on something, we all wear something. We can make judgments: this is comfortable to wear, this is a nice chair to read a book on. You don't automatically need to have contextual background information to understand the value of something. So, the immediate decisions that are made about the design are more immediate, more real in a way.

It brings it back to the human experience of engaging with an object, which is what it is all about.

The human element is also important because, at the fair, everybody's there for a reason—it’s a small group. And it’s important that everyone is treated equally. The kind of conversations and the kind of interactions people have is interesting; they might not know each other, but they are there looking at something. What brings everybody together is like a common interest in design.

This year is the second year of the fair. What did you learn from the first iteration of the fair that you all have changed or adjusted to take into the second?

Part of it is just practical: how we can make the transportation, lodging, etc. work out perfectly. And it’s also about managing expectations and being prepared for the kinds of questions and requests we will get. Like, if a collector is at the fair and wants to put in an order for 100 chairs right there, we need to be prepared for that.

But, it’s also about finding the kind of audience that will see the environment as a benefit, not an obstacle. Being there in this small beach town needs to be an experience they want to have. Sometimes, you'll be driving back and it'll be dark at night because there's no public lighting in the roads of Oaxaca, though you'll be fine.

It’s important that people want to engage with an environment that might be different than what they’re used to.

It’s important that the guests of the fair are able to recognize and respect a different way of life, and recognize that the difference is something special to experience.

It’s also very important to the gallery. The gallery is in Querétaro, which is an industrial city, three hours from Mexico City. It doesn’t get the same crowd as here, in Mexico City: we wanted to start something in a new place. And also we work with designers from all over the country, at times from places that are not obvious, and also representing designers from other countries, especially places that aren’t always recognized for their design talent.

It’s  also important, you know, to show that Mexico is a super large country. Mexico is not just three neighborhoods in Mexico City, though it's very easy to think about it that way, especially if you're an outsider only here for a few days—you don't really think how large the country is and how the complexity of design is so tied to the geography of Mexico.
It’s cool to see the natural sequence of your work: starting with the gallery, leading into the engagement of MDF, and finally building out these themes through Dysprosium, the publication. What has been in the front of your mind regarding the publication and how do you see it standing apart from other design publications?

So, we’ve always had this intention to be critical about how it will age. Dysprosium is a project that will be around for only five years, and we have said that since the very beginning.  We don't necessarily see ourselves doing this forever.

It is not a commercial publication—the funding for it comes from our other projects, like the gallery, that are more commercial. We hope that allows people to say whatever they want to say, in a critical way, without having to compromise.

To find criticality in Mexico can be rare. The idea of separating the designer from the design is often difficult for people here. It's like: you can still be a good person and make really bad ergonomics. If you're intending to create a chair that is intended to be comfortable and it's not that comfortable, somebody needs to address that. In order for a designer to grow, we have to be comfortable giving criticism.

Latin American countries also have very weird relationships with talking back. Or, you know, there is the colonial history that weaves into this: you were not allowed to say that you didn't like something or that something could be better.

In a lot of ways, it’s very important to make change, in order to get where we want to. We’re hoping to make more space for conversations, for criticism and for more authentic dialogue.︎
